This calculator uses the 2025 Federal Poverty Guidelines (which the IRS applies to 2026 coverage-year subsidies per Pub 974) and the 2026 applicable-percentage schedule (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-25, after the Inflation Reduction Act enhanced subsidies expired December 31, 2025). It is an estimate, not an official determination. Your final number is computed by HealthCare.gov at application time.
How the Obamacare subsidy calculator works
The subsidy that lowers your monthly Marketplace premium is a federal Premium Tax Credit (PTC). The calculator above estimates it from four things: your household income as a percentage of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL), your household size, your age, and where you live. The lower your income relative to the FPL, the larger the credit.
This is an estimate, not your final price. Your real credit is tied to the second-lowest-cost Silver plan (the “benchmark”) in your county and the income you attest on your application. A licensed bilingual agent confirms the exact amount with you for free — the carrier pays the agent, not you.
What income qualifies for an ACA subsidy in 2026?
Eligibility is based on your estimated annual household income measured against the FPL, and it adjusts with household size. Most people who buy their own coverage and aren’t eligible for Medicaid, Medicare, or an affordable employer plan qualify for some credit. For the exact 2026 brackets, see our Obamacare income limits guide and the 2026 FPL subsidy chart.
The old 400% FPL subsidy cliff — where one extra dollar of income could wipe out your entire credit — has changed in recent years. Our cliff guide explains exactly where it stands for 2026 so you don’t get surprised at tax time.
How subsidies scale with income
Credits are largest at lower incomes and taper as income rises:
- Near the lower end of the eligible range, a Silver plan can be very affordable — at the lowest incomes, after the credit and cost-sharing reductions, often only a small fraction of the full premium.
- In the middle of the range, you typically receive a partial credit that covers a meaningful share of the premium.
- Higher up, the credit tapers — which is why estimating income accurately matters. See who qualifies for Obamacare.
Self-employed? Your income can swing year to year — our self-employed ACA guide shows how to estimate it so your subsidy is right.
No Social Security Number? You may still qualify
Many lawfully present immigrants can get Marketplace coverage and subsidies — including in some situations without an SSN. See Obamacare without an SSN, and ask your bilingual agent, who handles these cases every day.
